Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), chief Mohan Bhagwat, said Saturday that only the vigilance of lok sanghathans (grassroots organizations) could guarantee that governments would follow the Constitution and that such organizations would not be "lackeys" of powers in place.
Mr. Bhagwat spoke at a conference organized by Swadeshi Jagaran Manch, a subsidiary of RSS, in memory of his late mentor, Dattopant Thengadi.
"What is the guarantee that the system in place (satta) will follow the Constitution? The guarantee is made up of vigilant citizens led by grassroots organizations and so must not be lackeys of power, "said Bhagwat.
"Popular organizations must stay away from power politics … Power is a system. As an integral part of the system, power never helps to bring about change. In power, many people want changes, but the power system binds their hands, "he added.
Speaking of the life of the late Thengadi, Mr. Bhagwat said that everyone should follow his life.
"We must see his life according to his ideology. We must also see what emotions he has aroused in the organizations he has created, "added the head of the RSS.
