Scientists believe that every 37 trillion cells in our body are replaced every seven years, our bones being replaced every ten years or so. It does not include the 38 trillion bacteria in your body. I am not a scientist, but I like this metaphor of the incredible human ability to intentionally change and evolve. Although there is no evidence, I like to imagine that the new cells have different experiences from those they replace, which could explain our tremendous ability to grow and evolve intentionally.
So you are born with a complex genetic inheritance of both your parents, the model to make you. After that, however, you are faced with the choice of becoming what you choose or allowing yourself to become what the world could do to you.
Expectations and drift
Your parents have expectations. Your culture has expectations. Your peers also have expectations of you and, for a part of your life, these are the most pernicious, especially if you are on a different growth trajectory. Many of the expectations of others for you will not match what you would choose for yourself. You must decide for yourself, even if it is necessary to disappoint others and act in opposition, that expectations are damned.
When I was a kid and I was playing rock 'n' roll, I noticed that there was a variety of shy and clumsy teens who got stuck. locked in their bedroom for 5 or 6 years with nothing but a pile of recordings and a guitar. They would come later with long hair and the ability to shred. They became shredders.
I have seen adults enroll in an MBA program or law school and come back as a business leader, officer or lawyer. They made the decision to become something different, and in a few years, through constant effort, they turned into a different – and sometimes – better version of themselves. I would not do it if there was a change at the cellular level, but I know about their identity, they were different.
Fight the drift
All this is to remind you of what you already know, but that you can sometimes forget: you can easily fall prey to drift, give up your intention and relax the efforts needed to be more, do more, have more, and contribute more .
If you want to avoid drift, you will have to fight the currents that work against you, the ones that drive most people in a direction they do not choose.
Do a good job this week, especially becoming one.
